TCS CEO: Tata Consultancy Services’ Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Executive Director, N Ganapathy Subramaniam, will retire next month, the company stated on April 12.
The largest software services exporter in India stated that it has no intentions to designate a replacement for Subramanian and will instead redistribute the responsibilities.
“At a press conference following the earnings report for the March quarter, CEO K Krithivasan mentioned that Subramaniam has been involved in various responsibilities, making it challenging for any single person to fill his role. As a result, the current approach within the leadership team is to redistribute Subramaniam’s workload, with no plans to hire a new COO.” -TCS CEO
Subramaniam assumed the role of COO at TCS in February 2017 and has remained with the company for more than four decades.
This marks potentially the second occasion where an IT company has eliminated its COO position, following Infosys’ decision to abolish the role in December 2021, when UB Pravin Rao served as the COO.
Natarajan Chandrasekaran, the Chairman of Tata Sons, is the younger brother of N Ganapathy Subramaniam.
Subramaniam joined TCS in 1982 after obtaining his Master’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Madras. He also participated in several training programs, including the Executive Program for Growing Companies at Stanford University.
Born in 1959, Subramaniam resides in Bengaluru with his wife Shobana, and their two sons.
Since November 2014, Subramaniam has served as an additional director and chairman of Tata Elxsi Limited. Additionally, he has held the position of Additional Director (Non-Independent; Non-Executive) at Tata Communications Limited since December 2021.
Before assuming the role of COO, Subramaniam was the Executive Vice President and Head of TCS Financial Solutions, a strategic business unit within TCS. During his tenure, spanning over five years, he oversees the implementation of non-linear growth strategies as well as manages the products and platform businesses of TCS.
Subramaniam has occupied numerous significant leadership roles within TCS, encompassing client delivery, business development, business integration, and product development.
During his tenure of nearly five years as the head of the Banking and Financial Services (BFSI) practice, Subramaniam played a crucial role in consolidating TCS’s knowledge base, refining domain-specific offerings, fostering opportunities, and establishing the groundwork for verticalization.
Subramaniam has strategically contributed to numerous milestone projects undertaken by TCS across various geographic regions.
